The Montana Legacy Project in the Swan Valley

For nearly a decade all of the conservation partners in the Swan Valley have been looking for a watershed-scale solution to the inevitable sale of Plum Creek's land for real estate.  None has been possible until now.  In 2008, the Trust for Public Land, The Nature Conservancy and Plum Creek Timber Co. negotiated the conservation sale of 320,000 acres of the company's western Montana timber lands.  This project includes all of Plum Creek's remaining holdings in the Swan Valley, roughly 66,000 acres.

These lands have been purchased by TPL/TNC in two phases:  December 2009 and December 2010.  Because the goal of the project to is maintain working forest lands, all of the Swan Valley lands will be subject to a Fiber Supply Agreement whereby local Plum Creek mills are assured of 92 MM Board Feet of timber for the next ten years.

Long term ownership of the land will be based on surrounding ownerships.  Much of the lands in the upper Swan Valley will go to the Forest Service, while the northern portion will likely be added to the Swan River State Forest.  Several parcels remain outstanding in and around the community of Condon and may end up as community forest, community land projects, or additional private holdings.

The primary contact for the project is Chris Bryant, TNC, Western Montana Outreach and Communications Director.  He can be reached at:  (406) 543-6681
